A year ago I saw Big Freedia for my first time at the NOLA Art House/Treehouse #1, and here is a video of that. Thanks to my friend Dom for sending this to me! If you don’t know Big Freedia I suggest you get acquainted with her now..start by watching her ass shaking at the end of the vid. She means BIZNESSSSS & is one of New Orleans’ pride and joys
So this past weekend I went to Austin, TX to cover Fun Fun Fun Fest for WTUL. It was rad from front to back.. starting with partying to every possible music genre on the road trip up (most notably I Know This Pretty Rave Girl by I Am X-Ray and I Saw The Sign by Ace of Base..haha) to making new friends at our hostel (Hi Marky Mark and the Funkee Bunch). At the festival each day we did interviews with various artists, including Architecture in Helsinki, Big Freedia, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Chuck D from Public Enemy, YACHT, Michael from Ty Segall, Asobi Seksu, The Black Lips, Shawn from Youth Brigade, EyeHateGod, and Baths. We’ll have a video out soon with the footage so stay tuned :) Everyone had great answers and was super nice and the weather was fucking awesome and two of my friends from California flew down for the festival and the hostel was comfortable with free pancakes in the morning (although I always slept past that..) and you could buy cigarette packs for a dollar and the afterparties/shows/venues were sick and I met up with two of my friends who live in Austin and I wore my Timberlands all weekend (and now they are perfectly dirty) and we had tons of free drinks and snacks and I even found time to work on my honors thesis a little. On Saturday night we went out hard dancing and we fucking tore up the dance floor with 80s techno at this little place called Beauty Bar.. Think of five us us standing on top of a ledge behind a couch kicking our legs left and right in synchronization. THAT SHIT WAS RIDICULOUS!!! We also went to this place called Barbarella’s which was fucking enormous. I just kept finding more rooms and dance floors. On Sunday we ran out of tape, right before our last four interviews, and these super nice guys from another media company let us borrow an extra camera from them and said I could MAIL it back to them from New Orleans. TALK ABOUT NICE! There are some truly amazing souls in this world. You better believe I tossed some extra WTUL swag into that FedEx package. My favorite five performances at FFFF in order were: Slayer, Ceremony (although this was actually at a post-festival punk show on a bridge..which was amazing), The Damned, FlyLo, and either M83 or Baths or The Black Lips. It’s hard to choose. I can think of few things I love more than music festivals. We drove back on Sunday night and arrived back in New Orleans at 6 AM Monday morning - thanks Zach for being such a champ - and real life blows in comparison but at least I can snuggle with my doggy at night again. Thank cod WTUL is presenting Dr. Dog and Lykke Li shows this month..I hope to see you there homies.
Last night’s Hood Internet, Christoph Andersson, and Big History show at the Maison (508 Frenchmen St) was a wild success. I was so stoked to see how many people came and how good of a time they were having. More than a couple people came up to me separately after the show and said it was the best one they’d been to in New Orleans.. EVER! Having poured a big part of the last two months of my life into planning that show, I have to say I was fucking stoked and fucking proud. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME OUT AND TO THE AMAZING ARTISTS THAT ALL THREW DOWN.. WE RAISED A TON OF MONEY FOR WTUL NEW ORLEANS! But if you are in New Orleans.. This weekend’s fun isn’t over yet. Come out to Maison again tonight to watch some live graffiti painting and booty bounce with Big Freedia!
